The president's panacea turned out to be an $862 billion bottle of snake oil -- and it cost $100 billion more than the entire Iraq campaign to date. The war made up just 3.2 percent of federal spending while the fight raged. And it accounts for less than 15 percent of the overall deficit since it began in 2003. Democrats are trying to keep control of Congress by scaring the wig off grandma with a phantom GOP plot against Social Security. That is not news. Social Security scare tactics have been regular campaign themes since FDR. Johnson’s “Great Society” allowed anyone that could muster little to no effort—could enjoy maximum financial reward—as long as someone else covered by working twice as much.
